Friday 2 May 2003 - Adelaide to Sydney
18:35 - Leave Adelaide
20:55 - Arrive Sydney
  • Checked in to Ibis Hotel Sydney Airport; went to local pub for a beer.
Saturday 3 May 2003 - Sydney to Vancouver via Honolulu
9:30 - Leave Sydney
  • Ten hour flight to Honolulu
  • Five hour flight to Vancouver
9:35 - Arrive Vancouver
  • Checked in to Vancouver Centre Travelodge: $AU114 per night
  • Wandered around Vancouver city centre (see Downtown map)
  • Pub for dinner and beers
Sunday 4 May 2003 - Vancouver
Day in Vancouver
  • Picked up hire car: GMC Yukon XL (for eXtra Long)
    • 4WD, 5.8 litre V8, seats 8 (i.e. 3 rows)
    • Cruise, auto, electric-heated-leather seats
    • 6-stack CD, sunroof, etc. etc.
    • Cost: $AU595 for 10 days hire
  • Science Museum
  • Sports Hall of Fame
  • GM Place: Ice-hockey and Gridiron stadiums
  • Stanley Park
  • Irish pub for dinner
Monday 5 May 2003 - Vancouver to Kamloops via Whistler
Morning - Leave Vancouver
  • Went via mountain route
  • Many high and windy roads
  • Various stops at waterfalls etc.

Lunch - Whistler
  • Wandered around the small ski town
Afternoon - Arrive Kamloops
  • Approx. 350km from Vancouver (although mountain route was probably longer and caused delays)
  • Stayed at B&B: $AU86 per night
Tuesday 6 May 2003 - Kamloops to Banff
Early Morning - Leave Kamloops
Afternoon - Arrive Banff
  • Approx. 500km from Kamloops (see the maps of the Rockies: map 1 | map 2 | map 3; Kamloops is west of Rogers Pass)
  • Checked in to Hotel: $AU120 per night
  • Wandered around Banff
  • Pub for meal and beers

Wednesday 7 May 2003 - Banff

  • Walk to nearby Bow river and Bow falls
  • 2 hour walk up Tunnel Mountain
  • Drive and walked to better falls
Thursday 8 May 2003 - Banff to Jasper
Morning - Leave Banff
Late Morning - Stopover at Lake Louise
  • Quick view of the lake
Early Afternoon - Stopover at Columbia Icefields
  • Tour on snocoach out onto Athabasca Glacier
  • Saw an avalanche on the way out to the glacier
  • See a pictorial description of the glacier: medium | large
Afternoon - Arrive Jasper
  • Checked into Whistler Inn for 3 nights: $AU160 per night
  • First try of `poutine' in Whistler Inn bar (chips with gravy and mozarella on top)
Friday 9 May 2003 - Jasper
Day in and around Jasper
  • Drive out to Lake Maligne as well as few other lakes
  • Walked in Maligne Canyon
Saturday 10 May 2003 - Jasper

  • Took cable car up Whistler Mt, and walked towards top
  • Drove to several local lakes
Sunday 11 May 2003 - Jasper to Vancouver
Morning - Leave Jasper
  • Saw bears on the way

  • Took the highway (not the mountain route) this time
