Biography

I obtained a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Systems Engineering (Honours) at UniSA in 1997, after which I began my PhD in Telecommunications, also at UniSA (within ITR). During my PhD I researched a number of areas including: satellite networking, middleware (e.g. CORBA), modelling of distributed systems, formal methods (in particular, Coloured Petri nets) and wireless Internet. I completed by PhD, with thesis titled Verification of the WAP Transaction Layer using Coloured Petri Nets, in 2001.

After completing my PhD in 2001 I was employed at ITR: first as a Research Associate, then Research Fellow (or Lecturer - Research) and then Senior Research Fellow (Senior Lecturer - Research). During the time I undertook research and engineering activities in contract research projects on wireless networks and satellite communications. Clients included m.Net, Auspace, Cohda Wireless, the Department of Defence.

In October 2006 I took up an Assistant Professor position at Siridinhorn International Institute of Technology (SIIT), Thammasat University in Bangkok, Thailand, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2012. My primary responsibilities were in teaching computer science and IT undergraduate courses, as well as research supervision.

In June 2016 I moved to CQUniveristy (Cairns Campus) as a Senior Lecturer in ICT. As a new campus, I am involved in teaching a variety of undergraduate courses, as well as supporting courses on other campuses across Australia via distance learning. I am continuing research activities.

My research is in data communications and networking, especially: wireless networking (wireless LAN, mobile ad hoc networks, QoS); mobility, service discovery and auto-configuration in networks; peer-to-peer systems and cloud computing; network security and privacy; and formal design of network protocols.

In addition to my research and teaching, I am also actively involved in professional associations. I was Secretary of the IEEE South Australia Section for 2 years. I have held other positions within IEEE prior to this. I am also a member of the ARC Communications Research Network (ACoRN), which brings together telecommunication researchers across Australia. I was the ACoRN Local Representative for UniSA in 2005 and 2006. Finally, I have been associate editor, TPC member and reviewer of many international journals and conferences.
